Gunmen abduct Dangote workers at Okpella

Gunmen stormed Dangote Cement ’s Okpella plant in Edo State, Nigeria, on 14 May, abducting dozens of plant workers, according to Business Day. Eye witnesses say the gunmen opened fire on a convoy of plant workers. The number of workers injured is currently unknown.  The attack has been confirmed by Michael Odofin, a spokesperson for Okpella Cement Plc. “I cannot give any details right now but our workers were attacked. The attack is still fresh. We have no one killed,” said Mr Odofin.

House of Representatives summons Nigerian producers

Cement traders are seeing price hikes despite stable fuel prices, according to Ghana Business News. All three grades of cement produced by Ghana Cement (Ghacem) have seen an upward trend. A bag of Super Cool cement increased from GHS82 (US$5.95) to GHS88 while Super Rapid now sells at GHS95, up from GHS87. Super Strong cement is now supplied at GHS105 from GHS95. Dangote Cement announces Philip retirement

Dangote Cement has announced the retirement of its Deputy Group Managing Director, Mathew Philip. Mr Philip retired from the cement producer on 30 April 2024, reports Business Day. “The company extends its appreciation to Mathew for his significant contributions and improvement to the operations of the business and wishes him well in his future endeavors,” said the company in a statement.  

BUA Cement CFO Jacques Piekarski resigns

BUA Cement 's Chief Finance Officer and Executive Director, Jacques Piekarski, has resigned. Mr Piekarski held the post since 2 October 2020 following a position as Group CFO for TGI Group Nigeria. Chikezie Ajaero has been appointed as acting CFO.

BUA Cement reports revenue growth in 1Q24

Nigeria-based BUA Cement has released its unaudited financial statements for the three months ended 31 March 2024. The company has posted revenue of NGN161,131m (US$114.4m) over the three-month period, compared to NGN106,352m in the same period a year earlier. Dangote Cement has reported group revenue of NGN817.4bn (US$659m) in the first quarter of 2024, ended 31 March, marking a 101 per cent surge YoY. Domestic cement sales in Senegal grew 3.3 per cent YoY in January 2024, coming in at 0.666Mt compared to 0.645Mt in January 2023, according to the country’s national statistics office, DPEE. Dangote Cement has reported revenue of NGN2.208trn (US$1.365bn) in 2023, up 36.4 per cent from the NGN1.618trn posted in the previous year.
